Along Side in Prayer
Back to the question, "What do monks do, anyway?"
We perform the "work of God" that we have just reviewed by praying of the
liturgy of the hours. This is our primary work. Then, taking that spirit
of stewardship out of the chapel and into the monastic workplace, we monks
have a wide variety of tasks at Subiaco, putting to good use our God-given
energies and talents. We all share in the upkeep of our monastic home.
Some monks teach in the academy. Some are involved in the hospitality
ministry connected with the continual flow of guests and retreatants.
Others have ministries in pastoral care. Still others find enrichment and
purposeful use of their gifts in office work, outdoors grounds keeping
(the area of work for yours truly), gardening, sawmill work, carpentry,
farming and ranching--the list is long and varied. Whatever skills you
bring to the monastery, and then some, can be utilized so that God is
glorified in everything.
