Serving God by Prayer and Work

As monks we try to do our best in our various works, but our essential assignment is to pray and spend quality time every day in communion with God. This is our primary work and we are more serious about it than anything else. In that call we are all equal, whether young or old, strong or weak, whatever our talent or education.

People tell us that this is where they experience the most important contribution of the monastery in their lives. Often they thank us for answers to prayer—for healing, finding a job, lifting depression, for peace in the family and on and on. We are grateful for these results recognizing that our role is to pray and work and to let God do the rest.

We are appealing to you for help in order to keep God’s work at Subiaco strong. For many years, the monastery was practically self-sufficient, with plenty of monks to fill the various roles in the Abbey and Academy. Over time that has gradually changed and for some time now we have been relying on the collaboration of committed lay people. As you would imagine this has contributed to our expenses. We are committed to providing these co-workers with a just wage for their families. That means we need the help of many friends.

It is certainly no secret that over this past year many organizations including Subiaco have found themselves in challenging times. While we see many areas of strength and opportunity we also recognize we need to make a special appeal for help. In the meantime we have implemented immediate cost-cutting strategies, such as freezing salaries at their current level, suspending new hiring, and advancing the timeline on a comprehensive energy conservation plan.

Subiaco continues to be, by no merit of ours, a source of grace and help for hundreds of people we know about and thousands we don’t. It is very humbling to know God is using our feeble efforts this way. Will you join with us by supporting this annual appeal? As you share with us the blessings God has given you, our mission becomes your mission,

Sincerely In Christ,

Abbot Jerome Kodell, O.S.B.
